Day 21

“Still Life with Wheel Barrow and Hummingbird Feeder”
6” x 8”
oil on canvas

This is my last painting of 2018 done on an absolutely icy day in Oakland. I found a little shelter from  the wind in Ashley’s gardening shed and had a really nice time in spite of the cold.

Day 20

Ashley's Backyard 3
oil on canvas
8" x 8"

Our challenge has meant painting no matter what. So I had to wait until the very end of the day but the evening sky made the trees stand out dramatically.

Day 18

Ashley and Scott's Backyard
oil on canvas
6" x 6"

This is the first of several paintings I want to do here. There's an ancient apricot tree that is just about to fall over. It will be gone soon. Scott mentioned that I should include. Not sure about it it. Btw it's freezing in Oakland.

Day 17

'Big Sur Near Esalen'
oil on canvas
6" x 6"

We got out so early that it wasn't really light and nothing was open but did find some coffee and then passed this lookout. The 30 day challenge is the best because in another circumstance I would have said 'Whoa..." and moved on. Not today. We stopped Mia read for a whole then signaled it was time to go.

Day 16

‘Big Sur’
6”x 8”

oil on canvas

We stopped along Highway 1 as the sun was shinning on the water. It was so bright it was hard to see but I didn’t want to pass up he drama of the cliffs and the ocean.

Day 15

Umbrellas at the Long Beach Museum
oil on canvas
6” x  8”

We’re half way through! It’s been gray and chilly in Long Beach. I love this view of the Long Beach Museum of Art from the beach.

Day 14

"Marina Drive"
oil in canvas
8" x 8"

Repetition made me think of palms which are so present everywhere but that felt too easy. It was a gray day in Long Beach and the marina seemed like a good challenge. It was. I froze.

Day 13

"Jee"
oil on canvas
12" x 6"

Saturday mornings we have a model in the studio. Today was a very small class so I painted along with the students. I'm rather out of practice. Figure painting is the hardest and already I'm looking at errors. One of the things I'm getting from this project is not to get stopped by obsessing about imperfections.

Day 12

"6th the Street from the Studio"
oil on canvas
12" x 6"

We tried to have a common theme today and Jim suggested 'Roads'. That's pretty easy for me because you  know it's LA and we're known for our roads.
This is a view from the studio looking West.

Day 11

"Winter Sunset with the Hollywood Sign"
oil on canvas
8" x 8"

The views from the studio are beyond amazing but it's easy to take them for granted day after day. There was one evening last week that was stunning. I painted this from the studio then referred to the photo that I took for color.

Day 10

"Mia's Farmers' Market Radishes"
oil in canvas
8"x 10"

While I was deep in thought about why I am painting and what I am painting, Mia came home from New York where the farmers' markets aren't so bountiful. She left these on the counter. Opps. I couldn't stop looking at them.
They went to the studio with me this morning and came back on the train in much worse shape.

Day 9

"Turquoise Door"
8" x 6
oil on canvas
There's this house I always see when I leave for work. It's gray, small, unassuming and frankly dwarfed by its Craftsman neighbors. But it's got a turquoise door. In the summer they put out two turquoise chairs on the porch and the place is transformed into a beautiful little beach cottage. I remembered that today on one of the shortest days of the year.

Day8

“Carroll Park”
oil on canvas
6” x 8”
It was a gray day today, excellent for painting greens. I went with my friend Sarah. ( www.sarah-arnold .com). She’s still out there .

Day 7

“ Passing through Bridgeport”
oil on canvas
6” x 12”

I spent the afternoon in the studio on just one more image of Bridgeport, California. I probably will switch to painting outside again. Just had to get these out of my system. The reference photo was from September.

Day 6

"Emigrant Road"
8" x 8"
oil in canvas

As your are coming into Bridgeport from the north there is a road on the left before you get to the rodeo and the Shell Station. It takes you through the back of the town and past barns, houses and even an old church.
Emigrant Road.
NOUN
  1. a person who leaves their own country in order to settle permanently in another.
    "emigrant workers" ·

    synonyms:
    stranger · visitor · nonmember · odd man out · foreigner · alien ·
And now I have in idea for tomorrow. I was thinking this was the last of  Bridgeport for a while but there's one more in the works. Ahh tomorrow.

And cudos to my partner in this pursuit Jim D'Evelyn. Here's the link to our mutual challenge that he aptly named 'Timemaking'.  https://whywithoutfences.blogspot.com

Day 5

“Off Season”
oil on canvas
8” x 8”

Here’s another one from my chilly walk around Bridgeport in November. This house is on Main Street also known at Hwy 395. I can clearly see it as it is in the summer, shaded by trees and covered with red white and blue for the 4th of July.

Day 4

“Pembar Garage”
oil on canvas
8” x 8”

My dream would be to go up and down Hwy 395 and paint in the towns of the Eastern Sierra. This is again from a photo I took in September. Shadows of Jollycone in the foreground

Day 3

" Blue Clear Sky"
oil on canvas
8”x 8”

I did this painting from a photograph I took in Bridgeport, California right before Thanksgiving week end. I prefer painting from life. There’s nothing like working outdoors. It’s harder though because things are always changing.  That week end I had my paints in the back of my car but I don’t know what I was thinking. It was 12 degrees.

Day 2

oil on canvas
8" x 8"
One thing about the studio in the winter months is the sun. It blinds students who are trying to work and changes so fast that you almost have to walk around to avoid it. But at the end of the day when it sets right over Santa Monica. The are colors are amazing and  I thought I was exaggerating until the sun went down tonight.

30 Paintings in 30 Days

I'm so grateful for the studio and all the wonderful artists who come in to work here . No one has a better job than me. Honestly I cannot remember one day that I left the studio and felt mad or stressed- other that some security issues which  hopefully have resolved.

But as I go back and look at my entries there is this continued complaint that I'm always making. It goes, "I'm teaching so much, I'm not painting." Blah, Blah Blah....back for years. This year it really got to me with the passing of my Mom and the move to Long Beach. So TODAY I am starting a 30 paintings in 30 day. (minus Christmas and New Year's Day).

oil on canvas 8" x 8"

Last week I had an amazing afternoon at the Pasadena Museum of History. There was a little painting from 1918 done at about this same location - breakers hitting the beach and the Palos Verdes Peninsula in the background.  Today it was one of those monochromatic days in Long Beach. Not too cold to paint but just gloom until I stood out there a while. I'll go back.
