Working on Side 2

I went out after the LIfe Drawing Workshop and stayed until 7pm. I was pretty tired but got a lot done. Classes will keep me away until Thursday then I think I can finish this side.

Starting on another utility box

I'm working on a utility box on the northwest corner of Wilshire and Wilton this week. I put it off for weeks first because of bad weather then because the studio was busy and then because it's hard to pack everything out onto the sidewalk. But once I did, it's the best ever work. Friday a work truck pulled up and asked if I could use a pack of shop towels (yes!) Today I got a Sprite. Don't usually drink that but it was delicious. And I haven't even started painting. Many folks at this point thing I'm doing graffiti clean up maybe as a volunteer or community service. The boxes need some arduous prep before they can be painted but I'm ready to go.

Jacaranda 2,3 and 4

oil on canvas
14" x 11"

This is my fourth day out painting the jacaranda bloom. There are a few streets in Long Beach where the city mandates that only jacarandas can be planted. It's tough on the neighbors but makes an absolutely display.
On my second day I did a painting that didn't work.
The third isn't finished and will be used as a study for a new utility box in Los Angeles. More on that later!

The jacarandas are blooming!

This time of the year the city has big patches of purple trees.
I'll be doing as many paintings as I can. I worked at 3rd Street at Hermosa in Long Beach yesterday..

I just put this one on the website. The winter skies were amazing this year. I did this one right after a storm. Everything turned pink at sunset.

New Paintings on the Website

I'm getting around to listing paintings on my website. There are quite a few in the studio and they are available for sale. I'm going to be posting them in the coming days. Here are three. The first two are from the 30 day challenge and the last one I painted a few weeks ago at the Poppy Reserve.

Recently finished

In January I went to Avalon. Ig was beautiful and no one was there. I did two paintings of the same view. I pretty much finished the smaller one but only underpainted the larger. I finally finished it last week

My Annual Trip

I drove to the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve yesterday. It was a perfect day.
Although it was crowded I managed to find a spot to set up and got this 90% finished painting. Will take to the studio for finishing touches.

From Palm Springs

All this rain has made the desert more beautiful that I ‘very ever remembered. I went to Palm Springs to see my friend Lynda Keebler’s exhibit and then stopped to paint on the way home.

I’ll finish it in the studio .

Blue

“Blue”
oil on canvas
18” x 18”

As I was posting this I was talking to myself about how long it took to get this painting to an almost finished state. I’m stopping work for now and may find something to change later .
But the crazy thing is that I started it February 1st  and today is the 5th. Want to keep moving with more work now.

Still working on Blue

I got some time in on my Blue  painting. I’m loving the time to really build up the paint with a palette knife. Looking to finish by the week end.

Continuing Collaboration

The 30 days are up but my partner Jim D’Evelyn and I are still talking about collaborating and how to structure work relates to what the other is doing.   I took off some days from painting  but really enjoy the conversations and problem solving that is involved.
I want to work in a larger format and for longer than a day on each piece.
While we are getting started ‘Blue ‘ is the theme for the next piece. Here’s where I got today. The underpaintingng and first coat of paint and I realize the red boat has to go.

Watercolors from the OC

These are two little sketchbook pieces I did looking down from the hills of Laguna Nigel. At first I didn't think the first one worked very well because there is so much going on with all the thousands of houses in the landscape. It's not perfectly successful but it's not as bad as I thought when I did it.  The second is an unfinished sketch of Dana Point.

Avalon in January

I went to Avalon after being absent for 10 years- is that possible? Here’s a scene I’ve done before . It’s pretty magical out there.
