Keeping up with number 5

Sometimes I put things out for students that I wish I could paint myself. In the afternoon Melissa worked on an ink drawing of this set-up. When class ended I moved it over to the painting area and painted this oil on canvas 6"x8".

The beginning of daily painting

Periodically I've started a practice of daily painting. It's hard to start because the beginnings are not as good as they will be in a few weeks. This is number two from yesterday because I scrapped off #1 from the day before. Oil on canvas 8" x 6".

The finished boxes!

Here is how it all turned out. If you go to Larchmont, look out for these!

New signal control box murals in Larchmont Village

I recently submitted these designs for printing. They will be installed in Larchmont Village in the next few weeks.
This time the process is a little different. Usually I paint right on the boxes. This time the images will be printed on 3M vinyl and installed on the box and hopefully graffiti sealed.
Will post as it goes up!

Nicaragua

When I finished the box in 1/22, I got to take a weeks vacation in Nicaragua. It was one of the most wonderful trips I ever had. I took my watercolors and did some painting almost every day. Here are a couple of my favorites.

All the painting is done .

I really wanted to finish yesterday but ran out of light before I could get the graffiti coat on. So one more day. I always get attached to the neighborhood and feel sad to leave all the nice people who stop to chat.

Wednesday progress

I finished side 3 and just got side 4 drawn in. I think tomorrow might be the last day!

Thursday - all day

I finished side one then under painted side two. This is very satisfying but exhausting work. Everyone is very nice and people who live in the pink building were very excited to see their apartment.

Day 3

I skipped a day because it took a long time to get primed and ready to paint. Here's the under painting for side one.

Day 1

I started on the box yesterday. The prepping process is arduous but important to get off layers upon layers of paint, posters and dirt. I'm almost there. Hope to finish priming before class today.

Studies for Wilshire and Shatto Place

It's taken me longer than expected to get these done. I mistakenly did two of scenes that were out of the Wilshire Center District- my mistake completely. With any luck I'll be able to work in between rain storms and have this done in the next 10 days or so.

Studies for the new utility box

I'm doing studies and thinking of depicting landscapes near the utility box located on Wilshire and Shato Place just around the corner from the Southwest School of Law. The first is a nightscape  of MacArthur Park and the second is a rooftop that I found around the corner from the box. The first is not quite finished, the second is just getting started.

Tuesday afternoon.

Persimmons again. And probably again today !

Monday night with persimmons

The persimmon tree has tons of fruit this year. I'm going to paint them before they're all gone. Maybe an hour or so on this one. 8" x 8" oil on canvas.

Still life

I had an afternoon to myself yesterday. Just enough time for a little 8" x 8" still life.

Three paintings from the 4th of July weekend.

Here are three 8" x 8" paintings from our recent trip to the eastern sierras. The weather was wild and uncharacteristicly cool. But it made for beautiful dark skies!

Almost Daily Painting

I did this plein air landscape in Paso Robles ( outside the Terry Hogue Vineyard) last September but it wasn't finished so I worked on it a little more. Note to self: the paintings are usually 80% finished on site then it's back to the studio to make them work.

Echo Park

I went out a couple of weeks ago and painted at the south east tipnof the lake- right by the freeway. Then finished up today in the studio. 18" x 18"

California Poppies

I made my annual trek out to find poppies. There were reports that they all were baked by an unfortunate Santa Ana over the week end . It was true that there were no flowers at the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve but I did find a big patch close by and spent a wonderful afternoon painting.

I'll finish there up in the studio and post the finished paintings this week,

Lot's of work happening in the studio!

This week end was great. Busy classes from Friday to Sunday! There's a great group of dedicated students who come here plus a whole bunch who come just for the Intro class. I'm starting to think of summer. Will have some classes on the calendar in March- life drawing intensive  and kids classes.

Big Sur

I was in Big Sur with my daughters over the holidays. It was stunning and I when I got back I remembered an older painting in the storeroom that I did of Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park.  I reworked it. It's larger that the others I have posted at 24" x 24". Oil on canvas.

Just a few more before the week starts..

I had a really busy week end with classes so there was no chance to be in the storeroom sorting but these have been hanging on the wall for a while. I have enjoyed looking at them. They always get lots of compliments so maybe someone else will enjoy them too. Click on the images for purchase info.
